children.
The
Growing Global Crisis of Conditions Affecting Child Development:
There have
been epidemic increases in the last 20 years of a number of conditions
related to child development. Experts
agree, for example, that at least 7.5% of our children have the
symptoms of an attention disorder such as Attention Deficit Hyperactive
Disorder (ADHD). They further agree
that at least 1 in 150 children have an autism spectrum disorder.
Moreover, anxiety, obsessive/compulsive behaviors,
adjustment and sensory disorders as well as speech and language delays,
learning disabilities and other communication challenges are
increasingly prevalent in our society and directly affect development.
Many families are struggling to meet the needs of their
affected children.
It
is estimated that as many as two-thirds of children with behavioral or
developmental conditions are not getting the help they need.
Treatment for all behavioral and developmental conditions
is multi-factorial, expensive, and essential. There
are tremendous financial and emotional tolls. Even
with insurance or Medicaid coverage, there are remarkable out-of-pocket
costs associated with these conditions. Many
of the most effective and important therapeutic interventions are not
covered by insurance, in part because of a lack of translational
research. Household stress levels
are raised and marriages and family structure are often strained.
Family challenges do not end when a child reaches
adulthood. At times the most
challenging issues for families take place at the transition to
adulthood and into the job market.
